ABOUT

ARTIST STATEMENT

Julie’s work is inspired by the sea, which holds endless fascination for her. She often travels and sails to gather inspiration, finding herself in unexpected sometimes challenging conditions, such as tropical storms and sudden changes in the weather. It is often these moments, which offer the most provoking subject matter for her work.

The mysterious and uncontrollable flux of the sea offers a sense of awe. This connects back to Romantic philosophy, which has influenced some of Julie’s earlier landscape and photography work. She feels this still plays an important role in art today because of the link to our most basic human instincts, along with a sense of the beyond and restorative uplifting powers of nature that we often overlook in today's society.

Julie uses an oil based monotype technique. Her unique painterly and spontaneous approach allows her to be responsive to the process of discovery and surprise as the images evolve. These works are one off, unique captured moments. Expressions of poignant memories in which time and rhythm play a crucial part in their construction. Artistic influences include JMW Turner, Norman Ackroyd, Maggi Hambling & Joan Mitchell.

Julie studied Drawing and Painting in Edinburgh and lives in Brighton, UK. Alongside her own art practice she teaches and manages the art department of a local college. Teaching Portfolio.

She is currently a member of North Star Print Studio and the Fiveways Artists Group.
